October Combined, FEAR FACTOR

I first have to apologize because I failed to take pictures of this activity, but I can tell you it was a blast, and I'll explain my set up. I thought it would be fun to do a fear factor activity for our October YW/YM combined activity. One problem I was faced with was not being able to use our gym as it was going under remodeling at this time. So being squished in our young women's room I had to figure out what activities I could have them doing that wouldn't require a lot of room. This is what I came up with. I set everything up in one half of the room and closed the partitions. I didn't want them to see the events before we started. I had them come and sit in the other half. After opening exercises I had them count off into four groups and then in their groups had them choose who they would have do each event. I wanted it to be fair because I couldn't see how one group who had a boy with a huge mouth would lose the marshmallow event. Hence why they chose before so they might end up with someone with a tiny mouth. Hopefully this makes sense. I made event cards and posted them at each event. This is what they looked like.

EVENT 1
Glob of Goo and Mystery Food Too

Objective: Taste and identify as many globs of goo and food as possible. Write the answers on the numbered card provided to your team.

Rules: Each team will choose 2 players to taste and identify the globs of goo and mystery food. The 2 chosen will then taste each food and write down what they think it is. For each thing tasted the team will receive one point. If you correctly identify it (the answers will be revealed at the end), your team receives another point for each correct answer. For a possible  20  points. Leaders that are part of the team will be the ones to tally the points. NO CHEATING!
Event Two
Quick Hands

Objective: As a team you are trying to separate and put the puzzles together as fast as you can. It will be timed. When finished put your hands up and yell done. The time will be stopped. Write this time on the card provided.

Rules: A leader in the group will use their phone or watch to track how long it takes. When the leader says go, separate the puzzles, and start assembling. Once you have all your pieces together raise your hands and yell done. Write on the chalk board the time it took you. The fastest team will earn ten points. 2nd place : 8 pts. 3rd place: 5 pts. 4th place: 2 pts. NO CHEATING! After you are done, separate the pieces and put ALL of the pieces back. Please don’t take any, my girls would be sad.
Event 3
Lock and Key

Objective: Which team can find the key and unlock their partner the fastest.

Rules: A leader in the group will use their phone or watch to keep track of how long it takes. Team must choose 2 players. One player must be locked up with the handcuffs, and the key is hidden in the bucket. When the timer starts the second player will run to the bucket and try to find the key. Once the key is found the second player will run back to their partner and unlock the handcuffs. Once both members are standing the clock will stop. The time it takes is to be recorded on the card provided. NO CHEATING! DO NOT DUMP THE DIRT OUT. KEEP AS MUCH DIRT IN THE BUCKET AS POSSIBLE. The swimming pool is just so we don’t have to vacuum. After completing the task sweep up the sand, and put it as well as all of the objects, and key back into the bucket. Try to bury it as well as you can for the next group!
Event Four
Stuff Your Face

Objective: Stuff your face with as many marshmallows as possible.

Rules: Pick one player from each team to participate. A leader will keep time with phone or watch. Within 10 seconds try to stuff as many marshmallows as you can in your mouth. Keep count, and record this on your card. 1st place (with most marshmallows) gets 5 pts. 2nd place gets 3pts. 3rd place gets 2pts. 4th place gets 1 pt.
Event Five
The Plank!

Objective: Who can hold the plank position the Longest?

Rules: All the teams will be doing this together. Everyone will get into the Plank position and see who can hold it the longest. The last four people will be the ones that earn points for their team. 1st place gets 6 pts. 2nd place gets 5. 3rd place gets 3. 4th place gets 2. Even if two people from the same team earn different positions it will give them both amounts of points.
Event Six
The Do Not Touch That Donut.

Objective: Eat your donut without touching it!

Rules: No hands, elbows, or appendages of any kind. No chairs either for enjoying your dessert. Bend over and enjoy!

Event one, for the food I laid out bowls for everything, and had a separate spoon for each participant. I chose to use three baby meats, a baby meal, grape nut cereal, two baby veggie mixes, candied ginger, preserved plum (ginger and plum I got at an Asian market), and a mango drink that I found at Walmart that smelt nasty.  The two participants that they had chosen prior would choose to taste the foods and guess what they were. They got a point for trying the stuff, and a point if they got it right. I didn't want to do anything too awful, although I thought about getting pickled pigs feet, and chocolate covered crickets.
Event two for quick hands I found five different puzzles that were 24 pieces each. I advise doing maybe only three unless you have a really large group working on it. I threw the puzzles into a bowl all mixed together and had a timer keeping track of how long it took the group to separate and then put the puzzles together. They received points based off of who was fastest down to the slowest.
Event three I took a kiddie swimming pool since I didn't want sand getting all over the place. I had a five gallon bucket filled with sand and items such as key rings, buttons, and batteries. The bucket was in the center of the swimming pool. I also asked them not to spill it all over the place meaning they couldn't just poor it out, they had to actually dig. Thankfully one of the young women leaders had received a pair of pink fluffy handcuffs :) for her bridal shower and still had them although they were still in the box. :) We used those and put one of the participants across the room on a chair and handcuffed them to it. The other participant had to find the key in the sand and unlock them. They were timed on how long it took them. Time started when they started digging, and ended when both kids were standing up.

Event four is pretty much self explanatory. I had them have only one person participate in this one. They had ten seconds to stuff as many marshmallows in their mouth as possible. I used large marshmallows. We thought if we did it again it would be fun to try those camp fire marshmallows. Our winner was 14. Wow, right?

Event Five: Once all the groups cycled through the first four events we had everyone get into the plank position and hold it as long as they could. It was hilarious trying to find room for everyone to sprawl out in that room but somehow they did it. The points just went to the last four still up going up to the last person up. A girl did get fourth place, so it's not just a muscle thing and boys don't just automatically win! I was also really impressed with some of the kids that I did not expect to last very long.

Finally we ended it with doughnuts. I had them get a doughnut and a napkin. They laid their napkins on the ground, laid down themselves, held their hands behind their backs, and raced to see who could eat it the fastest. Some didn't participate, and just ate their doughnuts which was expected.

I didn't put a lot of thought into a prize for first prize so they didn't get anything besides the satisfaction of winning. Overall though I thought it was a lot of fun and we got everyone participating, which is rare in our group.

P.S. I had score cards that a leader in each group kept track of. They would write down the time, and numbers, as well as the guesses for the food. They also added up the points so that we could figure out who one.
