Evening of Excellence 2013
I don't know about you, but I have found many times I cannot think of any ideas for something that I need to think of. Meaning, I'm in charge of 2014 Young Women New Beginnings. The thought that I cannot think of an idea for it has horrified me for some time. I thought of an idea thankfully, but that's for another post. This post is for our Evening of Excellence. Our theme was Oscars night. We thought it would be fun for our girls to dress in evening wear (borrowed prom dresses), have their hair and makeup done, and walk down a red carpet. Our girls are not ones that get to or want to suit up very often. The majority of our girls, like myself, do not know how to apply makeup, or afford buying it. So we thought it would be great if we had a professional come and do it. We also had a hairstylist come and help with their hair. For our stage where we had our talks, and where we announced the awards we had a slide show in the back with temples going on. We also hung our wedding dresses, and temple dresses from the ceiling. Our red carpet was laid out, and taped down so no tripping could occur, and then laid down white Christmas lights along the sides. The tables were simple but beautiful. We had white table cloths, and as our center piece we laid mirrors. We placed a board with a temple picture on it, with red berries around it. We had a back table for the girls to display something about themselves, or their accomplishments. Dessert consisted of a cupcake, frosted, a brownie with glaze, and a slice of orange. We had our Young Women president first speak about the importance of having the temple being their goal, and how our girls are beautiful. The temple is their kingdom. Second we had a young women speak on how personal progress has helped her become a better person. Third we had a young women bear her testimony about the gospel. The bishop then made his remarks reiterating the president's talk. Finally after closing prayer we actually had a photo shoot set up for them to have pictures taken together, some singles, some families, and then the how young women including leaders group photo. Our "Oscars" award was actually action figures bought from the dollar store mounted on a block of wood and spray painted gold. They looked awesome! I also snuck a photo of some boys staring at our girls....Overall it was a beautiful night, and I really hope it sticks with the girls that they are special.
